Our mission is to inspire and equip grandparents to pass along their
civic values and put them into actions to strengthen civic life
in their families, communities, and beyond.

Decency matters
Civility matters
Truth matters
Fair elections matter
The rule of law matters
Our democracy depends
on all of us

Democracy Needs Our help!

On the eve of our 250th anniversary, only 12% of Americans agreed that Democracy was doing extremely or very well, and 56% said not at all well or not very well. Worse yet, half of all Americans, and nearly two-thirds of those between the ages of 14 and 29, didn’t even know what was being celebrated! Over 70% of Americans over age 65 got it right.

Our goal is democracy that reflects core values: civility, honesty, fairness, and tolerance for others—together with respect for the law, the truth, and free and fair elections. These are what makes democracy work.

Our partners include nonpartisan organizations that strengthen democratic participation and public confidence in elections; interfaith and other groups that support healthy civic life within their communities; and pro-democracy senior organizations working locally and/or nationally.

What will we do first?

Show up on National Grandparents Day, September 13th, in ways that reflect our diverse priorities, such as

Rally around public buildings and emphasize standards of good government.

Gather in parks and other spaces to focus on civic engagement like voter support.

Create chains of “hands across” or “hands around” demonstrations of solidarity.

Post pro-democracy messages on overpasses or chalk them on sidewalks.

Gather individually or in groups with our grandkids for a fun activity, such as

art for democracy—what does democracy mean to me

build democracy—LEGO or other construction of a historic site

hike for democracy—talk about historic marches that shaped our nation from 1776 onward

Then what?

Rebuilding democracy isn’t a quick fix. It will take persistence and perseverence. We need a variety of tools for working on different parts. Think about organizations you belong to that could add a civic health program, drawing on existing resources.
